THE
PELAGIE ISLAND ARCHIPELAGO: LAMPEDUSA,
LINOSA AND LAMPIONE

Here
you can enjoy the seemingly endless days of summer and
the crystal clear sea. Lampedusa's
ideal geographical location and stunning geological beauty
offer tourists the unique opportunity "to go to Africa
while staying in Italy" that is hard to resist.
Lampedusa is the southernmost point of Europe.
Together with Linosa
and the rocky cliffs of Lampione,
they form the smallest and furthest Italian archipelago,
the Pelagie Archipelago.
The natural and geophysical characteristics of the Pelagie
Islands are more similar to those of Africa
than of Italy.
Lampedusa
rests on the continental platform of
Africa and boasts a typical African flora, fauna and climate.
Unlike Lampedusa and
Lampione, Linosa,
with its three extinct volcanoes, belongs to the Sicilian
volcanic system.

Lampedusa
is a small island full of coves, grottoes
and other delightful geographical features which
reach the height of their striking beauty on the
"Isola dei Conigli" (Rabbit Island),
a tiny uninhabited island just off the coast. Today
this tiny island has been declared a nature and
wildlife preserve and is home to the "caretta
caretta" turtle that still lays its precious
eggs here. The "Isola dei Conigli"
is separated from the mainland of Lampedusa
by a narrow isthmus which can be reached by wading
through the shallow waters.
The houses built from local stone, known as "dammusi",
are characteristic to the island and were inspired
by the architectonic styles of Arabian culture.

The
Pelagie islands have a wealth of migratory
wildlife: the green cormorant, Eleonora's falcon, sea
turtles and dolphins.
One particular meteorological feature is the "Marrobio",
a sudden rapid rising of the tide from one to three meters
high, which takes place in April-May and September-October.
The island has approximately 5,800 inhabitants who are
employed mainly by the tourist industry or work on the
sea. Via Roma, the main street of Lampedusa,
is filled with a worldly atmosphere and lined with luxurious
shops and boutiques, renowned pastry shops, ice cream
shops and pizzarias as well as banks and the LE
PELAGIE TRAVEL tourist office.
THE SEA
Scuba divers are already familiar with the Lampedusa
sea which has been called one of the most beautiful
seas in the world. Here the Mediterranean reaches
the height of its colourful splendour - from emerald green
to iridescent turquoise, with a 30 meter deep visibility
that can be seen from high up along the precipice of the
north west wall, to the wide expanse of cobalt blue stretching
out beyond the cape.
|
|
The
Lampedusa
sea also offers an endless bounty of fresh fish
and seafood such as grouper, lobster, dentex, gilthead,
white bream and many others.
If you decide to have a swim, perhaps in the magnificent
natural amphitheatre of limestone descending into
the water and tumbling down onto a beach of the
finest sand on the "Isola
dei Conigli" you will experience
a sensation that only the pristine waters of a crystal
clear sea can give you.
You can even count on good weather - in Lampedusa,
the average temperature in October is above 20 degrees
Celsius and the water will stay as warm as it was
during August.
